DAAD Postdoctoral Fellowships for Sub-Saharan Africans at AIMS in Tanzania, 2018


Applications are invited for Postdoctoral Fellowship for Sub-Saharan Africans at AIMS in Tanzania. As a self-governing non-profit trust, which is supported by several universities, AIMS offers postgraduate programmes to talented students from the African continent.

The purpose of the programme is to provide opportunities to the postdoctoral mathematician under the guidance of AIMS, the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences.

South Africa is lucky to have one of the four DAAD Information Centers in Sub-Saharan Africa. It is located in Johannesburg with a nationwide mandate for the Republic of South Africa. The Information Center provides information and consultations for South African institutions, Higher Education Management, Academics, Future Researchers, Students and Staff. It coordinates a variety of projects and programmes in all fields of higher education and research cooperations between South Africa and Germany.

Scholarship Description:

Academic Mobility for Africans Sustainable Scholarships for MSc and PhD in Ethiopia, 2018-2019


Applications are invited for scholarships for MSc and PhD in Railway Engineering at Addis Ababa University for the 2018-2019 academic year. African Railway Center of Excellence (ARCE) is one of the African Center of Excellence II projects supported by the World Bank.

The aim of the centre is to strengthen railway professionals’ development through short-term training, MSc and PhD level education, and research in Ethiopia and the region at large.

Addis Ababa University (AAU), which was established in 1950 as the University College of Addis Ababa (UCAA), is the oldest and the largest higher learning and research institution in Ethiopia. Since its inception, the University has been the leading centre in teaching-learning, research and community services.

  • The applicant should write a personal statement/motivation letter describing the candidate`s interest to join the program.
  • The applicant should have two letters of recommendations of advisors/ supervisors from previous educational institutions.
  • PhD applicants should submit the research proposal including a detailed work plan.
  • Female candidates and candidates from underprivileged regions or groups as well as candidates with disabilities are especially encouraged to apply.

Digital Earth Research Fellowship for Artists and Designers in Africa and Asia, 2018

The fellowship is aimed at artists and designers at a stage in their career wishing to take 6 months for reflection and research.

Digital Earth: A fellowship for research and experimentation with and around the materiality and immateriality of the digital reality.

Scholarship Description:

  • Course Level: This is a 6 months long research fellowship programme.
  • Study Subject: Digital Earth is a 6 month-long fellowship for artists and designers based in Africa or Asia, working across a variety of media, who would like to investigate our current technological reality. It is a unique research support programme, which supports experienced artists to reflect, research, experiment and produce work. Examples of possible research topics are: the infrastructure of Mongolian crypto-mining, the performativity of the robot-ports on the Siberian coastline, the soundscapes of the coltan mines in the heartlands of Congo, the cultural protocols of freeport zones, the aesthetics of satellite imagery, the agency of machinic vision, the political imaginations of geoengineering projects – and more.
  • Scholarship Award: The Digital Earth Fellowship provides:
  • A stipend to enable research, experimentation and to produce work in a specific geographic location in Africa or Asia, for 6 months. The exact amount of the stipend will be based on the cost of living in the country where the research will take place.
  • Access to a research and production infrastructure consisting of a network of researchers, (online) theory and practice courses, research institutes, exhibition venues, creative hubs, art biennales, residencies and companies.
  • A mentor, who will support you in your research. The Digital Earth mentors are internationally-renowned artists, designers and researchers.
  • The chance to discuss your practice with other fellows during sessions on Google Hangouts;
  • Final works and research findings will be exhibited in 2019 or 2020 in a roaming exhibition.

Selection

Your application will be assessed by a selection committee on the basis of your research proposal; this includes this includes the quality of your work, your visual and reflective skills. 14 Women for Africa Foundation Visiting Senior Research Fellowships in Spain, 2018


The Women for Africa Foundation is calling applications from African Women to apply for its six months Visiting Science by Women programme Fellowship to be taken at various Centers in Spain.

The Women for Africa Foundation is a private entity founded in 2012 by former vice president of the Government of Spain, María Teresa Fernández de la Vega, with the aim of contributing to the development of Africa through its women. Since then, the Foundation has launched a dozen projects in the areas of education, economic development, health, and knowledge and women empowerment.

In order to be eligible Individual must have solid working knowledge of English.

Scholarship Description:

  • Course Level: This is a six-month visiting senior research fellow for 14 experienced African women researchers.
  • Study Subject: The preferred areas of research include:
  • Health and Bio-medicine
  • Energy, Water, and Climate Change
  • Agriculture and Food Safety

  • Economic Science
  • Physics and Materials Sciences
  • Nanotechnology
  • Scholarship Award: In general, the duration of the research stays will be six continuous months. Nevertheless, depending on personal and professional needs, and with the approval of the host research center, the planned research may be split into two stays within two years after the fellowship has been awarded. Successful candidates will have access to the following benefits:
  • Return flight from their center of origin to the host institution
  • Living allowance of 2.400 Euros grosses per month to cover accommodation, personal expense and health and occupational accident insurance coverage.

Beneficiaries must devote themselves entirely to research at the assigned research center and may not be beneficiaries of any other fellowship, grant, stipend or regular income during their research stay. Beneficiaries might be asked to formalize their relationship with the research center in writing. In compliance with the local laws, the

Woman for Africa Foundation or the research center (as the case may be) will, if so required in each particular circumstance by the tax and/or social security regime, retain or withhold the compulsory amounts from the living allowances.
